PICTURE PERFECT SKIN By Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields Looking back, it's hard to believe we thought nothing of soaking up the rays. We even tried to enhance the process with foil reflectors, baby oil and timers for rolling over to make sure the sun "kissed" every exposed inch. Take a look at the picture above ... how many hidden skin-haunting habits can you find? We all may have been guilty of a bad habit (or two), but looking at us today, you'd never know this dirty little secret. And that's because you can erase past sun sins ... In fact, we now know that by age 18, we've only acquired 23 percent of our lifetime dose of UVA. So, no matter what past habits are haunting you today, it's never too late to change your skin's destiny. Today, putting your knowledge into action doesn't mean hiding away. Picture perfect skin is possible year-round. It just means starting new habits that help instead of haunt. Here are a few of the most important: 1. WORSHIP THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH: This is no myth; the so-called "fountain of youth" truly exists. In fact, it's probably in your medicine cabinet right now ... sunscreen. Put sunscreen on the pedestal it deserves - it really is the best anti-aging cream on the market today. Generously apply at least an SPF 15 every day. Reapply throughout the day and always remember, more is more. Believe it or not, the best rule of thumb when it comes to sunscreen is when wearing SPF, don't expose your skin longer than you would if you were not wearing sunscreen. 2. WHILE IT'S OK TO ENJOY A DRINK, OR TWO, NOW AND THEN: Remember, moderation is key for a happy, healthy complexion. Alcohol can increase redness, trigger rosacea, flare psoriasis and age your skin beyond its years. 3. DON'T SMOKE ... EVER: Health implications aside (and there are many), smoking bears a huge impact on your appearance; so much so, that we can spot a smoker a mile away. The dead giveaways - yellow teeth, gaunt face, sallow complexion, and fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth. Remember, whether you're 18 or 81, your best skin yet is just a few healthy habits away. |
